### Description

Within this product, you will find the items I use in my own classroom to introduce a number line tool. After students create their number line 0-21, I collect and laminate them so students can use them as a tool for addition and subtraction later on. Another great option is to send their created number line home so they can teach their families what they learned about a number line.

PLEASE NOTE: This document prints on 11×17 paper.

Depending on your intended use of the number lines once they are created, you may want the number lines to be created by students on a certain size. I have included the following size options:

1. Approximately 5.5”x 34” when put together

2. Approximately 3.25”x 17” when put together

3. Approximately 2.5”x 14” when put together

If you are interested in the sequence of lessons that helped to build up to this particular lesson, or the lessons that follow (which teach students how to use the number line) please see my store or contact me.

Included:

Suggested lesson outline

Vocabulary card to match lesson

3-page printable poster for recording “What We Notice About Number Lines” during lesson

Student activity sheet for creating a number line 0-21 (4 variations to choose from; 3 different size options for each variation)

Exit Ticket

However you use this lesson/activity set for creating a number line tool, I genuinely hope that you find these materials helpful in your classroom!

Happy teaching & happy learning.

### Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).

CCSS1.OA.C.5

Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).

CCSS1.OA.C.6

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
