Assignment: Section 7.1 Homework
Graph the inequality.
y x> 7 − 14
To graph the inequality, first replace the inequality symbol with
an equal sign and graph the related equation.
y x= 7 − 14
First, find two points. The value of y for the first point is . Find
the xcoordinate of the point.
7
x = 0
Plot the first point, ( , ).0 7
Now find another point on the line. The new value for y is . − 7
The xcoordinate for this point is .1
Plot ( , ).1 − 7
If the inequality symbol is < or >, draw a dashed line to show
that points on the line are not solutions of the inequality.
If the inequality symbol is or , draw a solid line to show that
points on the line are solutions of the inequality.
≥ ≤
Since the inequality is , then use a dashed line.>
The graph consists of a shaded halfplane that is either above
or below the line. If the line is solid, the line is also considered
part of the graph.
To determine which halfplane to shade select a point that is
not on the line as a test point. Substitute the coordinates of the
point in the equation to determine whether that point is a
solution.
A test point is ( , ).4 5
Now complete the graph. If the point is a solution, shade the
halfplane containing the test point. If not, shade the opposite
halfplane.
Since the point is a solution, shade the halfplane above and
to the right of the line.
This is the completed graph.
